While some students already have jobs, many do not. They still rely on their parents for monetary assistance. Students are encouraged to find jobs not only to start earning money for themselves but also to gain some experience in the fields that are related to what they want to study in college. From Photography to Computer Science and Biotech, there are jobs available for students all around the Bay. So why don’t more people take advantage of this?
Many large companies such as Playstation, Genentech, and the Giants are looking for interns. There are also smaller local companies looking for students as well, such as GlobeIn, a subscription-based service that is looking for photographers to help market their products. No matter what field you want to enter, there is someone looking for students to bring into their field, from marketing to business, there is something for everyone.
It’s great that all of these opportunities are out there, but what’s the point? Why should you devote your time to another extracurricular activity when you already have schoolwork to contend with? The answer is simple: while it may seem like an extra burden now, it will pay off in the long run. When applying to colleges, and jobs after college, employers and admissions officers will like to see that students have entered a field early on, which shows their dedication to something.
Even if you aren’t sure what field you want to enter after college, there are still plenty of jobs around to help you get some money. Dozens of local businesses are hiring as well. Shake Shack, Trader Joes, Joe & the Juice, and Starbucks are just some of the companies looking for employees.
“There are so many good reasons to get a job, to learn something new, to earn money, learning responsibility – being on time, having a schedule, learning how to improve your communication skills, and adding to your resume,” added Ms.Kane, the Career advisor.
