What should I wear to school today? A question most teens ask themselves before heading to school. For inspiration, teens look at apps like Pinterest or Tik Tok. However, they don’t even know that the trends they are taking inspiration from, were popular decades ago.
Dated trends such as low rise jeans, flare leggings, oversized glasses and the white tank top blue jean formula from the late 80’s and early two thousands have been resurfacing.
A major fashion movement at the moment has been the reclaiming of“Y2K” style. Much of the clothing is centered around bright colors such as neon pink or purple. Glitter is another key in achieving the style. In Y2K fashion, glitter can be found on T-shirts and even jeans. Many people accessorize with chunky glasses or baguette bags.
Juicy Couture, a popular tracksuit brand from the early two thousands has made a huge comeback in the past year. You can even find these tracksuits being sold at modern stores today.
Many students at San Mateo use fashion as a way to express themselves and their personal style. Freshman Annabelle Bishko says her day to day outfit includes “flare leggings and a big jacket.”
Another huge trend that came back from the past is bell bottoms or flared pants. Pants such as these flare out from the bottom of the calf, and have slightly curved hems. In the late 60’s and 70’s both females and males would wear these types of pants but now they are more commonly worn amongst teenage girls and older women.
Mrs. Smithers, a teacher here at San Mateo High School explains that she has noticed “a trend in loose fitting jeans has come back.” She was a teen in the 90’s and got to live through many fashion trends and has gotten to experience watching them reappear many years later. After seeing all of these new styles, she has created her own personal way of dressing which includes sweaters, form fitting jeans, stripes and fun necklaces.
An example of an item that has never gone out of style is cargo pants. Cargo pants are worn by both genders and are one of the most common and comfortable clothing items. Cargo pants were a popular fashion trend in the early 2000’s and have recently come back in the 2020’s.
