Given that golf is usually associated with establishing tactical business connections, complicated company transactions, and is viewed as an elite hobby, many people fail to recognize the tenacity and determination required to become a successful golfer.
Lindsey Huang, a senior here at San Mateo High, is an exceptionally skilled golfer. Huang started golfing the summer before 6th grade. She explains that “my dad and brother both golfed before and they introduced me to golf by bringing me to the driving range at Mariner’s Point. I really enjoyed it, so I started playing it more often until I finally decided to play competitively.”
Huang has accomplished an impressive array of achievements. “I competed in the CCS sectionals three times — once with our school girls’ golf team and twice individually,” she states. “This last season, I won the PAL Girl’s Golf League Championship. I also won a national qualifier last year and won two tournaments.” Additionally, the San Mateo Daily Journal named Huang Golfer of the Year last year.
The golfing team at San Mateo High has further fuelled Huang’s passion. “I would have to say that my experience with the girls’ golf team at San Mateo has been the highlight of my golf career,” she reminisces. “I’m so endlessly grateful to have met such wonderful players during my time playing in the PAL league who I’ve been friends with for years and grew close to during the seasons.” In an interview with the San Mateo Daily Journal, she remarks that “It’s really important to play on a team and have that experience. I think it’s a great way to connect with a community and build relationships.”
Huang will continue to golf throughout college. Starting freshman year, she researched colleges and universities that would satiate her passion for golf as well as her academic accomplishments. “I plan to play DIII golf at Amherst and continue to play competitively throughout college,” she explains. Overall, Huang presents a skillfully crafted golfing career for the future.
