Because of the coronavirus pandemic, people have not been able to see new movies in theaters. Personally, going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do and, as it turns out, one of the only things I frequently do when I meet up with friends. While theaters are slowly starting to open up, many (including myself) would still rather watch movies in their homes as the pandemic rages on. In order for fellow students to look forward to something, I thought that I would share some of my reviews on upcoming movie trailers.
The first trailer that I watched was “The Devil All The Time,” directed by Antonio Campos. The movie is coming out on September 16 and features highly acclaimed actors including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård, and more. The movie appears to be set in a small southern town with Tom Holland portraying a student and Pattinson portraying a preacher.
“I don’t get what the movie is about but I like the cast,” said Uma Labouisse, a senior at San Mateo. After watching the trailer several times, I still struggled to understand the plotline myself but I did find myself wanting to watch the movie due to its dark undertones and ambiance.
The music itself was not very eerie, but when juxtaposed with the scenes from the trailer, it made me think that the movie would be some sort of thriller. As the music becomes increasingly dark and twisted, the imagery too becomes more disturbing and intense, leaving the viewer shocked, excited, maybe slightly ill. I have a feeling that this movie is going to be good, so I’m very excited to watch it.
The next trailer I decided to watch was “Wonder Woman 1984,” coming out October 2nd with Patty Jenkins returning as director. I thoroughly enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie and I appreciated how they portrayed a female superhero. She was strong but without being cheesy like Captain Marvel.
I’m glad that they kept the same director from the first movie, as she has already shown the capability to create a nuanced and captivating film with Wonder Woman. Even before the movie she has shown expertise in choice of stars. While still starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, Jenkins has added Kristen Wiig to the list of amazing actors for this movie. “I think casting Kristen as the villain was a big swing and I was really hopeful that it was going to work out and from what I saw in the trailer, I still have my doubts about it,” said Ms. Wozniak, drama teacher at San Mateo. While I do like that the villain is also a woman, I hope that they do not make her a weak side villain to the actual villain of the movie.
Yet, while the first movie was quite stellar, I don’t want this movie to experience “sequel syndrome,” where the sequel is worse than the first movie and fails to improve on what the original did so well. As for the content of the movie, I love the ‘80s setting since it gives off such a colorful aura and the music is going to be really lively.
I’m not sure what they are going to do with Chris Pine’s character, but I am really excited to see the outfits that they are wearing. Also in the trailer, the special effects have really been dialled up to 11. Wonder Woman literally rides lightning at one point so I’m guessing that this movie is going to have great special effects and fight scenes. Overall, I’m really excited to see this movie and eager for its release.
The last trailer that I looked at was “No Time to Die” coming out November 20, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. I originally didn’t know what this movie was going to be about until I saw that it was another James Bond movie. I don’t have much to say about this trailer except that I really don’t want to see it. I was in shock that they were making ANOTHER James Bond movie when there are already hundreds of James Bond movies out in the world. What I can say about the movie is that the sets were beautiful. I like action movies, but I hate that they keep on making more of the same movies in the same format. I simply do not want to see this movie nor do I want to see any more James Bond movies.
Most of the trailers I watched looked to be great movies, and I hope that they can get the same amount of revenue as usual Hollywood blockbusters. While they can still release these movies straight to TV, it has become abundantly clear that this format does not result in the same amount as normal theatrical release. Hopefully, America can start getting its act together so all the movie theaters across the US can open and we can finally enjoy these exciting new films.
