Senior Profile: Cheuk Lam

While members of the SMHS Jazz Band dip and sway to the music flowing through PAC, listeners pause as a trumpet’s distinct timbre pierces a pregnant pause in the song. Perched at the back of the band, trumpet player Cheuk Lam mesmerizes the audience with his effortless artistry.

Lam’s journey with music began when he was only in first grade, his years of hard work and dedication now emanating from each note he plays. After moving to the Bay Area from Hong Kong at the end of his freshman year, Lam quickly rose through the ranks of SMHS’ Symphonic Band and Jazz Band by becoming first chair and lead trumpet, respectively. Additionally, his accolades reverberate his unique ability and artistry, most recently as a recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Senior Award.

Lam’s favorite music program memory, however, decenters his laundry list of accomplishments in favor of time shared with others: “jazz band sectionals where the four trumpets […] goof around and practice improvising, [and] meeting up during holidays to practice.” Likewise, he pointed to the Jazz Band’s Senior Activity Day performance, which “celebrated all the graduating seniors in the band by featuring them in different solos,” as his proudest yet, citing the group’s opportunity “to share the music [they had] been practicing in the past year or so.”

Lam’s affability and camaraderie with musical collaborators helps enrich his own ability, fortifying the Achilles heel of many talented musicians.

“I think [Cheuk] has a big heart,” said music director Mr. Tribuzi, “He’s caring, friendly, easy to get along with. He’s got a happy personality, he’s a happy guy.” Similarly, he noted the infectious nature of his upbeat attitude, saying that “They’re really strong musicians, the whole [trumpet] section. He’s the leader of the section, and the section is sort of a reflection of his expectations.”

Although Cheuk will maintain music as a hobby after high school, prioritizing the joy he finds in his instrument, he eagerly noted that he plans to return to SMHS as a member of the orchestra pit in future musicals. After the notes of his final solo echo through the PAC, Lam leaves a legacy of tremendous ability, hard work, and humility that will continue to resonate long after he leaves the stage.
