When I mention Sofia La Bove to just about anyone, the first thing that comes to mind is her exuberant laugh. In conversation with Ms. Wozniak, we both agreed that her laugh was one of the most joyful sounds in the world, and it will be sorely missed at San Mateo High School. Sofia is an integral part of San Mateo Drama, and the program will miss her talent just as much as her laugh. “Sofia is so multi-faceted, and really stepped outside of her comfort zone with her roles this year,” says Ms. Wozniak, who’s worked with her since she was in Much Ado About Nothing her freshman year. Wozniak adds, “Sofia has always been in my world at San Mateo.” La Bove, in talking about her experience at San Mateo, noted that “being in our productions is something that’s really helped me be confident in my skills and elevate my sense of self.”
Sofia has been involved in the San Mateo Drama program since her sister went here. When she was younger, she helped out by selling concessions at the shows and helping with candy grams. Her freshman year, she was involved in Anything Goes and Much Ado About Nothing, which she says was a “really fun experience.” Her sophomore year, she was in the virtual version of Drowsy Chaperone. She’s been involved from every angle, from inhabiting some of the most important roles in the school’s productions to assistant directing Crazy for You. “I really enjoyed watching her grow into such a good behind the scenes person. It was not at all surprising but very rewarding,” says Ms. Wozniak. In terms of what La Bove connects to more, being on stage or being behind the scenes, she says that “both are very different, but very fun experiences.”
Sofia has made a significant impact on the school as a whole, far beyond just the drama program. Ms. G, another teacher who she’s really connected with, says that she will miss her “her kindness and her compassion for others – friends, family, and anyone she comes across. Our jokes and conversations are what I will miss most when she has graduated SMHS.” Everyone I talked to also mentioned Sofia’s dedication, and the fact that she “gives 110%” to everything she does.
In the future, Sofia is hoping to pursue a career in speech therapy. “When someone experiences hardships in the way that Sofia has and stays resilient and even uses those experiences to fuel what she wants to do with the rest of her life… that is a sign of an extraordinary person,” says Ms. G. There are a lot of connections between musical theater and speech therapy, and Sofia is hoping to really utilize those. “I’m hoping to go into speech therapy, and there is that point where music can really help with speech therapy. You can really see a difference in people that have speech deficiencies.”
Amazing person.
