Sports Restarting

As we head into 2021, some non-contact sport seasons like girls tennis, co-ed swimming, and co-ed cross country have gotten ready to begin their season. However, many other sports like basketball, soccer and volleyball will most likely not start their season this year. Teens and parents all have different opinions on whether sports should restart. A protest group called “Let Them Play CA” is planning rallies at the city hall for sports seasons to restart.

But before final decisions are made, we should consider both sides of the problem. While it may be beneficial for teens to reconnect and get their exercise, there are many risks along with it. As most sports can’t be played with a mask, the contact between equipment and players can increase the spread of COVID-19. Players also have to adapt to new protocols and have to be extra careful while being at practice everyday. Generally, a smooth season might be challenging to run this year.

In my opinion, I think schools should find a sweet spot  between having no seasons this year and having an entire regular season. Coaches can cut down practices from every day to every other day and can limit games between other schools. Coaches would also have to be very strict about following protocols and constantly reminding their players to do so. If we are able to have a partial season, it would benefit teens to finally get out of the house and be able to socialize with their teammates. It may be worth the risk as teen’s mental health is also extremely important. So what are your opinions on restarting the 2021 sport season?
