Ms. Corea, the Student Nutrition Operations Manager for the San Mateo High School School District, encourages students to work in the cafeteria, she says, “I want to invite students to consider working in our school cafeterias. This role offers much more than just a paycheck—it’s a chance to gain hands-on experience in the food industry, which could lead to future opportunities in the culinary field or other food-related fields.” With this job, shift times vary depending on the student’s availability. There are opportunities to work in the morning before school starts, during brunch, and/or during lunch! Students working before first period would be cleaning and preparing the food, while students who work during brunch and/or lunch would be passing out food. Students would receive $17.35 per hour. Working in the school cafeteria has already proven to be a rewarding experience for many students. Sophomore Kevin Gonzalez shares his experience working in the school cafeteria when he shares, “Yeah I like this job, it’s fun. I like it because I get paid and I work at school so just a couple minutes a day every day.” His perspective highlights how this job is fun and not very time-consuming. Senior Stella Francesconi states, “I would be interested in working in our school’s cafeteria because I think it helps you gain experience with working in different environments, while also giving you an extra income every month.” Having a part time job in high school gives students good experiences outside of the classroom.
There are tons of benefits to having a job as a high school student. One major benefit is earning your own money. With a part-time job, you can learn independence with money spending, and learn how to save and invest. You can also learn time management skills while working part-time by balancing school and work. Students can feel more confident being independent and fulfilling their responsibility.
